Are you a Senior Executive or Manager responsible for Treasury, Finance, Technology or indeed all of the above? If your Organization is on SAP’s enterprise resource planning (ERP) software or planning to move on to it, sooner or later you will be asking the question: Would it make sense to also use SAP’s integrated Treasury Management System for treasury operations and related corporate and business functions? It is a difficult question, and one that many corporations at the senior level struggle with. In this publication, I hope to help you make an informed decision as to whether this is the right move and solution for your organization, with an objective and critical assessment of SAP’s treasury solution. In the book, we will look at its evolution, functionality, value proposition, and future potential, factors to consider if SAP TMS is right for your organization. Should you decide to move forward, I’ve shared my thoughts on migration, implementation, and post implementation considerations, based on my twenty-two years of treasury transformation experience on SAP’s Treasury Management System. Given the level of my intended audience, I have tried to be as succinct as possible, providing information key to decision making, and staying clear of unnecessary technical details and obiter dicta, to convey key messages and information. Each chapter is stand alone and ends with a summary of key takeaways. Chapter 1 provides a high-level overview of SAP’s TMS solution, its functionality and components. Chapter 2 looks at its evolution, how we got to where we are today, and the impact of new technologies and S/4HANA on SAP’s TMS solution. Chapter’s 3 to 6 delve into specific functionality available in key sub-modules of SAP’s TMS, and to what extent it meets treasury’s strategic and operational needs. Chapter’s 7 and 8 cover integration, both internally and with the external environment, and reporting and analytical capabilities of SAP’s TMS. Chapter 9 addresses the key factors to consider in deciding to move onto SAP’s TMS platform, pros and cons of ERP based vs. standalone TMS, as well as migration, implementation, and post implementation strategies. We conclude in Chapter 10 with a synopsis and a look at the road ahead for SAP’s TMS. Every organization’s needs are unique, and it is my hope that this publication will help inform any decisions you may make with respect to your choice of Treasury Management Systems for the strategic and operational needs of your organization. With a foreword by Brad Larson, C.T.P. (former AFP Board member, and Treasurer at several major national and global retailers) he writes: “In this book, Arjun explains the SAP TMS functionality in everyday Treasury language. He helps the reader understand how to utilize this TMS system to simplify and automate processes. I’ve seen research showing one of a company’s greatest source of risk is employee data entry errors. SAP’s structure reduces employee data entry which decreases that risk while increasing controls, audit ability and reporting capability. And the biggest benefit to a company, it reduces the time necessary for people to do repetitive and routine functions. That frees people up to think and to make value-added decisions instead. This book should be a ‘must-read’ for any company wanting to increase their profits by creating better processes for managing their financial assets…Read this book. Your job will never be the same again”
